Question about trunk locks...

So my dad lost the key to my trunk lock today after working on the car. I can't find the key, apparently it was on the roof of the car when he took off in it to test drive it

I'm looking at IAP and VAS, and they both have them, but they're different styles?

Which one is better?

The VAS one looks to be a lot better due to the screw system holding it in place, but I dunno. Any tips?

A locksmith can usually make you a new key for $20-25 bucks.

I guess I can get a blank key and try that out...I may call around this week and find out.

umm... did your doors use the same key? if so, a qualified (real) locksmith could use the door tumblers to quickly make a new key... but ... you'll most likely need to provide the blank.

why wouldn't you consider used from a parts car? loads chipper (no fries).

You know what, it might have... I'm not really sure. I know the locks are all original -- was the trunk key the door key for the spider as well?

I have a parts car, but its in a storage building, I don't know where the trunk key is for that car either, and the storage building is small so getting those locks out would be a PITA.

I think I'll get a blank and hit up the locksmith...actually a few blanks... who knows when this will happen again >.<

EDIT: Unless someone has a lock set they're willing to part with? I dunno, pulling out all the locks seems like a pain though.

trunk, doors and glove box were all the same key. ignition was different.

a competant locksmith with a blank key should be able to create a key for that lock set. if you can bring a door handle with a tumbler intact, i am betting he could create a key at his leisure in his office.

However, once a real locksmith knows what happend and what you need they can knock out a key from your door lock in about 30 minutes. I have had this done several times after buying a parts car at a salvage sale.

Fiat ignition locks, though... don't lose that key!

Heh, I have 2 keys to the ignition switch luckily, and I know where the other one is.

I should have gotten a copy of the original key...I still think it's in my driveway somewhere.

So would I have to pull the lock out of the car anyway? Or can I like..bring the car to them and let them do it there on the spot?

I dunno, I have some time to figure out what I'm going to do, I'm probably going to order a few blanks and taking it to a locksmith...so I don't have this problem again.

Used to live in a small town in Washington where I knew a locksmith who could make/do anything, it was amazing. Now live in a small town in Montana where the local locksmith can do nothing right the first time, if at all.
Took him the truck lock a few weeks ago, stopped by today he said he couldn't get a blank?? For a 72 spider?? Anyway, I got it going, one of you fine gentleman had send me the guts and a key out of a trunk lock months ago.
Anyway, hope you have a qualified locksmith.

Good cause I found my lock and there was no keys that fit it.

I had a locksmith open my other car and make a key years ago. He might have come from AAA. It was quick and did not take to long. I think he picked the trunk lock and used that lock to make the key for the door.
