Fellow Canadians: Where are you buying GL-1?

Post by NSDave »

I know our American cousins can find this stuff by the bucketful for $5.00 at NAPA :D , but where are you finding it in Canada? If you're using it, tell me where I can find it please :? ; if you're using something else for tour manual gearbox, post that up too.
My apologies for starting another oil thread, but I need to find a local source  .
Cheers,
Dave

Dave - My NAPA guys can't get their GL-1 either. I used Pennzoil Synchromesh last year - you can read all the opinions in the other threads. It's not characterized as being GL-1 or non-EP, but it was recommended. A friend buys Shell GL-1 (I forget the brand name), but has to buy a 20 litre pail to get it. How far are you from Maine? :D

Peter,
That 'how far from Maine are you?' made me laugh... Thanks for that :) .
Unfortunatly for me, I'm a little too far in this case  . 7 or 8 hours for some oil, no way.
Cheers,
Dave.

If they can wrap it properly, Vicks might be able to ship it. Matt - can this be done?

Well, I checked with the Shell retailer... Shell Dentax (GL-1 spec) is available! $89.40 plus tax for a 20 litre pail. I didn't get a price for the 64 litre keg or the 210 litre barrel  . A couple of litres of Pennzoil Synchromesh are looking good.

You could always buy the Shell and resell it in 1 litre bottles. Be prepared for sticker shock on the Synchromesh - $15/litre :!:

How many liters do we need?

You'll need to buy two - it takes about 1.5 (from memory).

Hi Dave.
I bought some RED LINE MT-90 oil from a jobber store. Lordco, I don't believe is out your way but perhaps NAPA might be of some help. it says "All synthetic Formula" on the front and the back says API GL-4 gear oil. Further reading on the side of the bottle says the "MT-90 is recomended for all manual transmissions and front wheel drive manual transaxles which recomend motor oils, or GL-1 GL-3 or GL-4 gear oils"
Red Line Synthetic Oil Corp. Benicia CA. http://www.redlineoil.com
Perhaps others have used this stuff and could comment. I currently have a simple 90 wt in there now.

Hey guys sorry I just found this thread.

YES we will ship GL1 to Canada. We do it all the time its not problem at all.

Also while scrolling down I saw someone say something about REDLINE. We have talked with Redline and their techs simply say "Never use our products in a Fiat transmission." This is straight from them as we tried it in our race cars and had terrible results....

So yes please email or call us and we will quickly get you GL1 with no problems.

Thanks Matt. Glad I went back to the 90 wt I have in there now. I did have this stuff in there for a bit but sure seemed watery. Now what to do with 3 quarts of the stuff?

That's bad news about the Redline. I see from the PO's records and the guy that he bought it from also that "Redline Synthetic" has been in my '81 transmission for about 10 years now. Maybe 8,000 mi, 12,000km in that period.
