Just finished a tranny drain and refill. Followed SOP with 2 quarts of Napa GL1 and a drill pump I've had for years. Now its time for the the rear end. Just need to know how much fluid and which hole to fill.

Joe,

You will have two plugs on the differential. The lower plug (driver's side) is the one you remove to drain it. When you remove it, make sure to inspect it for metal shavings because the end of the nut is magnetized. Clean it off and put it back in. Then look up a little higher towards the front of the differential and there is another nut that you remove to fill it. Both nuts are 17 MM.

Usually, a quart and a 1/4 to a quart and a half should fill it. Just keep filling until fluid comes out of the hole that you are filling. And make sure to use GL5, which is specifically used for rear-ends to prevent breakdown and foaming.

It's always a good idea to make sure that you can get the 'fill' plug loose before removing the drain plug. You'd hate to drain all the oil out, then not have a way to fill it back up.

You mean you cant fill it thru the axle with car jacked on its side?

All went well. It took about 40 minutes total and I never had to lift the car. The old fluid was a bit dirty but had no surprises in it. Now it is on to the exhaust system. Cat or no cat, that is the question.
