Rear Differential
Rear Differential
It appears my Rear Differential (1978, but it's an early model) is leaking some type of lubricant out of the bottom. What's supposed to go in there and how do I get it to stop leaking? I don't have the owner's manual and am unfamiliar with working on the differential!
Eventually, whether it is one drop per week or one drop per minute, if you do not address the issue of leaking lubrication.....your differential will run dry. Before it is completely out of gear oil, you will have some big trouble.
Changing the differential gasket is not a big deal, if that is where it is leakig from. Two hours tops, and under $10 including oil.
A manual is a great thing to have. I prefer the Brooklands. I think all of our major suppliers carry a couple of brands each. You should seriously look into one.

Re: Rear Differential
Question, I changed out the differential gasket, and now it's leaking worse then before I changed, should I have put a liquid gasket on the bolt threads?? Also, the gasket I purchased was from IAP.

Re: Rear Differential
Mine did the same. I drained and re-sealed and bolted back together but I let it sit for a couple of hours before I filled it back up. I have no idea if that is/was normal protocol, but its not leaking now. I used a blue sealant with the gasket. The surfaces were clean and wiped with a rag with brake cleaner and let dry for a few minutes.Warpigs446 wrote: I changed out the differential gasket, and now it's leaking worse then before I changed

Re: Rear Differential
We (my mechanic) took off the cover and inspected and cleaned and reinstalled with liquid gasket only. No problems whatsoever.

Re: Rear Differential
I'm new to this, but what is a liquid gasket? Is it spread on the regular gasket or does it replace it?
What would you ask for in the auto parts store?
Thanks for educating a novice.

Re: Rear Differential
I don't know a brand, (my mechanic did the work on this topic) but it replaces a fibrous mechanical gasket. It is brushed on the clean surfaces, sets up awhile, then reassemble and seals very well. No problems so far.
