Hey all,
Hopefully someone else has dealt with this and knows the fix. Removed the bumpers from my 1979 spider 2000. Got the front turn signal conversion from Vicks. No instructions but seemed pretty straight forward. Thought wiring was basically plug and play but passenger side signals don’t work and drivers blink slow. Also dash indicator doesn’t work now. Everything worked fine prior to the switch. All bulbs are good including rear lights. Good ground. The new lights light up just fine as running lights and hazards. Baffled as nothing was changed with the wiring. Seems if it was the flasher turn signals would be out on both sides but? Please let me know if you’ve dealt with this and fixed it.
Thank you!

Re: Faulty turn signal after conversion
If it's not a bad ground, the most likely cause is that your replacement turn signal bulbs are a different amperage than the original. The stock flasher requires a certain amount of current or it will flash slowly, or not at all. Which is what you're seeing.
The OEM bulb was a 1073 at 21 watts, so 1.5 amps per bulb at 14 volts. What is the amperage of the bulbs in your new lights?

Re: Faulty turn signal after conversion
Thanks Bryan, that makes sense although I’m not sure how to tell the amperage on the bulbs. The original signal bulb has no numbers but looks the same as the new one (1157). The service manual says it’s a 1034. I just assumed when I bought a turn signal conversion kit from Vicks the bulbs would be correct, and maybe they are. I tried to swap in the old bulbs but they don’t seem to fit for some reason.
I appreciate the guidance, thanks.

Re: Faulty turn signal after conversion
Looks like the 1157 pulls 1.82 amps while the 1034 pulls 1.58 amps so sounds like your right about that being the problem. So will just getting a new flasher be the fix?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Faulty turn signal after conversion
I like using an electronic flasher. They do not depend on bulb current for its flash interval. I think the one I use is a NAPA EL 13H
I'm sure there are others that will work. The fact that is uses an internal timer circuit means it will work with incandescent bulbs and or LED bulbs. They are more expensive than a standard flasher but I have never had an issue with one. They are rectangular shaped but fit into the Spider flasher clip.

I agree with Spider2081. The bulbs in your new flasher assemblies are probably different enough to cause an issue with the flasher.
However, one other thought: Are the new bulbs dual filament or single? And what about the old bulb? A dual filament would have two contacts on the very bottom, and a single filament bulb would have only one. Plus both would have the outer side wrap which is the other contact.
The reason I ask is that some spiders were set up with separate bulbs for the separate functions of turn signals and front marker lamps, and some spiders used a single bulb that had two filaments, one higher current for the turn signals and one lower current for the front marker function. I don't know which type you have, but perhaps the wiring in the new assemblies isn't quite right.
But, I'd start with the flasher unit recommended by Spider2081 and go from there.
