Is that the throwout bearing spring? I'm sorry for your bad news. Hope there's no other damage associated with the spring!

Some rust, but mostly "glitter"

Denise, the throwout bearing is outside of the transmission. This is the thrust spring from the first or second gear synchronizer which done broke.

Mark, worth saving as a core, or to the recycler?

I got a used one for $400 from a Washington DC member who is something of a collector. It is waiting to go in the car following some rust repair and painting (see Gina update in Fiat Spider Related.)
