There's just something about the Miata that screams "chick car". I've driven one before when I was looking for a car for my daughter. It was built well and fun to drive, but too small and lackluster for me. The newer ones are better, but still not masculine enough in their look. They still look like Barbie cars.

When the 850 spider, came out, it got the same "chick car" rap. This came mostly from its lack of power and the concept that chicks couldnt drive a sports car with any power. (I hear you out there, Denise ).

That's correct, when the rest forgot what motoring was all about Mazda put it out there and reaped the rewards.

Mazda did what the rest (including fiat) should have done. Don't get me wrong I love my spider, however Fiat (or Pininfarina) where still making the same car designed in the 60's in 1985 when soon after in 1989 Mazda released the Miata (we call them MX5's). I do realise the 80's was a very 'intersting' era when it came to car designs, I won't even mention what Ford did in the 80's with the mustang (dang I just did)...
The Fiat 124 was waaay ahead of it's time when it was first released, and in reality the last generation should have been 16V with IRS and a full sealing top, not just rack and pinion steering (which it should have had long ago) and bigger front brakes and a few interior mods....

If the word Miata is forbidden here, I'd hate to see what you'd say about my wife's 2006 Pontiac Solstice. I bought it as an anniversary present with zero research because it is the only car (read: non-truck) she has EVER liked... Mistake #1: buying it... Mistake #2: letting her fall in love with it... Mistake #3: not secretly swapping her leathered out toad for a GXP...
