I was replacing the rear transmission seal and noticed what I believe to be excessive end-play in the output shaft. It is only present in neutral and can easily be felt by holding the front shaft and pulling on the rear shaft. There is about 0.090" fore and aft play in the shaft. Is this normal?? Does anyone know how much end play is alowable??
thanks

Re: transmission output shaft endplay
I just rebuilt my trans and there is no play in the aft shaft. There is a tiny tiny smidge in the front shaft because it rests in a roller bearing and is needed.
Are you talking about play with the 5th/rev. cover off, and the donut yoke bracket and nut removed? Was there movement with the yoke and nut installed before you did removal. Manual says that max. allowable movement is .02", you say yours is .09". Could be bearing slop. Not likely gears, because they all rotate at the same speed and dont wear in that way. They only wear on the teeth which wouldnt affect shaft slop.
That yoke nut gets tightened to 108ft.lb.
There wouldnt be any slop in-gear because the syncro rings and selection forks are spring loaded and would eliminate any.
I would tighten the yoke nut to spec and see if there is play.

Re: transmission output shaft endplay
I am thinking I you are right. I have the fore/aft play in the shaft but never put the yoke or nut that holds it back on. When I felt the play I thought it might be a problem. You are correct tightening the nut should lock it all together. I will try that tomorrow. Thanks for you thoughts.
