Rounded rear brake bleed screw.

Post by clarkedj »

Guys,
I have a couple of questions. I bought my son a 1978 Fiat 124. Car runs great after electronic ignition and electric fuel pump install. He seems to be loosing brake fluid but I can find no obvious brake fluid leak at the wheels or at the master cylinder. We did replace the booster because it failed but the braking system worked fine. I have checked all the brake lines and and again no leaks. The brake fluid runs down in about 2 months of use. Of course I have told him to check the levels every other fill up and top off the reservoir if necessary. As any 17 year old kid those warnings have fallen on deaf ears. I have had to bleed the braking system 2 times because he ran the fluid out. The first question is: Is there a place that a leak can occur that I am missing? Question 2: I managed to round the bleed screw on the left rear pass. brake. Any suggestions on a good tool to remove the rounded screw. I have a socket that is suppose to grab rounded screws but I think it may be too big as I can not get a clean grasp. Any other ideas would be helpful.

Thanks

which side of the reservoir runs dry? The master cyl could be leaking out the back, into the booster. You won't see fluid because it gets pulled into the manifold through the vacuum hose. That could explain the failed booster.
The compensator could be leaking, but a common leak spot is the center hose to the rear axle.
As for the rounded bleeder, you might need to use vise grips. If you've been bleeding it recently at least it shouldn't be seized.

Mark,

Thanks for the reply. I will replace the MC and see what happens. When I pulled the booster there was not fluid or residue inside or on the gasket that I could tell but maybe I was looking on the wrong side driver side rather than engine side. The diaphragm was definitely torn.
