can anyone tell me what the original carb for the 78 1800 spyder was? i am trying to decide which is a better option for my car wether to convert over to dual carbs or later fuel injection and or what is involved in either.

A 1978 1800 should have a Weber 32ADFA carb, however midway thru the year Weber changed the idle stop solenoid from a large one with 10mm threads to a smaller one with 8mm threads. Both carbs ar exactally the same with regards to measurments of the barrels, venturies, jet sizes. The idle stop solenoids are the only difference.

From what I've read the 32 ADFA is the best stock carb to be put on a Fiat. Manfori has a article about different and modern Carb upgrade options, but I can't remember the link right now. Maybe some one else will post it, or I'll repost the link when I get home.

I guess it depends on what kind of driving you plan to do. If you are only going to do daily driving, the 32 ADFA or fuel injection are best bets for economy and performance. If you aren't worried about fuel consumption, then a dual carb set up would work, but it's inefficient at idle or low rpm situations.

Both fuel injection and dual carbs will be expensive investments. Plan on $500 to $1200 for new setups.

Let me know if you want to go to fuel injected, I have an almost complete setup that I could sell cheap, you would only have to buy a few new parts.

So, why the drastic change between the stocker and hi-performance?

Have you taken all the steps to remove all the emissions crap, or are you not allowed to do that where you live?

I maintain that there are many things that you can do, without spending all that money that would have an immediate and drastic affect on your stock '78.

have you:
removed the air pump
replaced the catalytic converter
put in a free-flow muffler
changed over to a 4-2-1 exhaust

a brand new 32/36 Weber, straight out of the box runs $295, and is a simplistic change from your stock unit. Coupled with the above, wow what a change....without going through all the work and expense of converting over to FI.

I'll let the dual carb people make their own pitch, but the things i mentioned above go along with anyserious performance upgrade.

the joys of canada,(emmisions?). you could very easily throw on headers and attach a strait pipe from front to back and as long as it wasn't too loud no-one would care. as i speak from expierience with my old GT-6. i have however long since removed any of the air pump/egr devices. just looking for a little more from the go. this particular car i purchased about 7 years ago and spent about 5 years putting it tegether properly, it was saved from a barn where it sat for 14 years. it actually only has 70,000 km on it. it seems it was given to someone who really had no appreciation for it, however since rectified. now just looking for the dressing without taking away the heritage.

Does your car currently have a 32 ADFA on it? For $25 you can rebuild and clean it and see if that makes a difference. It's a start.

i currently have the 32, however the tread for the jets were stripped by a previous do-gooder. still runs fine, but idles a little choppy.

try some teflon tape then reinstall carefully
