The compensator is a non-adjustable part. You install it, attach the arm, and bleed the system. The compensator then regulates brake fluid flow as described in the article.

Actually it is adjustable, there are specs in the manual for the angle it is mounted at. The holes in the mount are slottedmfir this purpose. The Haynes manual for sure has the specs and procedure.

I just posted a scan of brake compensator installation instructions from the Fiat 124 Sport repair manual circa 1970 on my gallery at http://gallery.me.com/lasersailor#100017. The Haynes manual does provide better instructions, IMHO, but I don't have access to that right now.

Note that neither this document nor the Haynes manual mention the mysterious 4 x grommets that the IAP catalog implies are needed. And, in removing my compensator and control rod I have not found any grommets lurking about...

I believe that the plastic grommets you refer to are for the short link attaching the rod to the rear axle, which are commonly worn out. If IAP has the grommets, I would get them. I tried to find some a few years ago, and nobody carried them at that time.

Thanks Alvon, I will check those again on my car. Good to know that those could be changed later after I reinstall the new compensator.

I believe the four bushings/grommets are for the torsion bar to the link bar and from the axle to the link bar. Two grommets per connection pushed in from either side of the torsion bar and into the welded bracket on the axle mounting.

If one looks at the Haynes image on page 128 it shows two of the bushes.

On the scanned image they are part number 7 on the page.

I traced an annoying distant little rattle to those grommets, or rather, to where the completely rotted-away grommets used to be. Hand-carved some new ones which seem to work fine.
