Install Mechanical Fuel pump

Post by FiatJim »

For a '73 spider, 1592 engine, does is this procedure correct? :?:

'Carefully align the new fuel pump with the mounting holes on the engine block, making sure the pump's lever arm is properly seated below the fuel pump lobe on the auxiliary shaft. This is vital for the pump to operate correctly. It may take a little wiggling and pressure to get it seated properly."

Yes. What you need to do with a mechanical fuel pump is ensure that the lever of the pump is properly positioned on the lobe of the auxiliary shaft. This used to be easy when fuel pumps came with a "foot" lever that was almost 1/2" wide. Modern replacement pumps have a lever that is only 1/8" wide, so it is very easy to mount the fuel pump with the lever riding off the end of the shaft (and not on the lobe). Takes some practice it does, but eventually you'll figure out how to position the pump as you mount it to the block, so that the lever is riding on the lobe as it should.
